at the radar, it is raining really hard. they are getting wind driven heavy rains from virginia beach down to nags head. those areas of yellow and orange, the center of circulation of earl is just about 40 or 50 miles to the east of hatteras. but the heavy rains are coming in inland and slamming the beach area there. our local radar not showing rain here but there are a few sprinkles in the northern neck of virginia and bay. some of the rain will be arriving into ocean city in the next hour. and earl, here's the wide view continues to advance to the north. it's a category 2 storm. the winds have decreased since yesterday morning at this time but still a powerful storm moving north-northeast at 16. it will take it up towards new england. closer view of the track showing it will be further out to sea. there's still going to be enough tropical storm force winds, maybe 40 to 50-mile-per-hour gusts at ocean city later today. we'll have temperatures climbing in the mid to upper 90s. and breezy tomorrow near 80. looks like a great labor day weekend. how's the traffic? >> we're starting you off wi

're going to show a live picture of virginia beach. the storm is just offshore there. sam champion is there. you see the waves kicking up. it was a little tough ride in north carolina. >> overnight, earl came within 85 miles of cape hatteras, with wind gusts up to 78 miles per hour. that is hurricane force. and it may be a sign of what's to come further north. over the next 24 hours, hurricane earl is expected to give a second punishing blow to eastern massachusetts. that's montauk right there. hurricane warnings are all up for cape cod and martha's vineyard and nantucket. boats being pulled from the water. fema, sending supplies and telling people not to be lulled into any sense of security. >> we have our correspondents in the storm zone, up and down the coast. we lead off with sam champion on virginia beach. hey, sam. >> good morning, george. good morning, elizabeth. this is a category 2 hurricane. there was some weakening overnight. when you talk about hurricane-force winds at 74 miles per hour, 78 miles per hour, you're talking about a nasty storm. look at the skies here. look at the c

. >> reporter: the fire marshal is the president of the virginia fire prevention association, which is pushing to require builders to install sprinklers in homes. he says the industry has to weigh the possible losses against added costs and what people can afford. >> yesterday one of the firefighters was talking about vinyl siding and what that may have -- how that may have contributed in the fire. what does the fire marshal say about that? >> any firefighter they talk to they to be like vinyl siding in general but they say it is the case everywhere. it is cheap and easy to maintain so you can't stop vinyl siding. you can't require brick. it is too costly, but he says what people need to do is practice better fire safety. he said just in manassas alone, in the last year, they had $100,000 worth of kitchen fires. he said people need to pay attention. they cannot leave grills burn thong porch and walk away. be cognizant of fire safety. and it would do a lot of good, he says. >> thank you for that report. >>> 0 record record-breaking heat across the area tonight. topper is on the terrace on this
are underway after a massive fire destroyed three northern virginia mes and damaged several others. the blaze broke out on tillett loop in manassas and quickly spread. >> reporter: hot spots kept firefighters busy all night and all morning long. it was huge. i've never seen something so big. >> reporter: kathy kennedy is one of the lucky ones. her home had moderate damage but is salvageable. she was able to escape with her two young children. >> reporter: the neighbors say the fire started in the backyard and possibly on the deck of a home on tillett loop. firefighters say the win caused the fire and flames to jump from house to house. all the homes in the summer lake neighborhood sit close to one another. >> it is very close. it is a house. but the price was right at that time. a disaster. >> reporter: it took dozens of firefighters more than two hours to bring the firender control. three home were destroyed. five others damaged. a few pets in one of theomes didn't survive. >> i noticed several speculative causes and origin have been reported by witnesses. would not put any credence in those
. >>> a commuter alert now in virginia. state police are on the scene of a serious multicar crash on eastbound i-66. officials tell 9 news now all lanes of eastbound i-66 have been shut down after a collision involving at least three vehicles prior to the roosevelt bridge. we are just getting in good news from these motorists. it may not look like it on this shot but parts of the lane are open and some traffic is getting through in the area. fire officials say initial 918 calls indicated the motorist that caused the crash may have suffered an emergency. several victims were transported from the scene. again, some of the lanes of eastbound 66 have reopened but traffic will be delayed for a while there. >>> firefighters are keeping an eye on the burning rubble of what used to be two homes in northern virginia. still winds helped to spread the flames among several houses in manassas near summer lake. kristin fisher has the latest. >> reporter: kathy kennedy can't fight back the tears as she looks at what is left of her home, one day after the fire. >> it was huge. i have never seen something so big. t

drivers coming out of virginia to commit to 270 and then those drivers who are merely take 2g 70 to continue their trip out of virginia. let me show you. this is the pa poen. i promise you the delays are pretty substantial. look at that. nothing is moving on 270 north. obviously so witho lanes open and these lanes do kick back as you might imagine to the capital beltway. it was a very nasty commute a you made your approach. as y can see, inching along painfully slow and the inner loop, by the way, is headed away from the camera here up toward e top of your screens, continue onto 270. and then again as we make the pass, democracy boulevard, it is just"i inching along. unfortunately they're moving the cameras around because it is a live accident. the ramp that comes around is a flyover ramp to continue on the hov lanes to continue northbound ong 270. the best workaround, there's not really a direct one, but 29 working its way through bethesda. but those lays -- excuse me -- those workarounds are not going to last for a very long time because a lot of the driversre going to have the

lewis, also the first woman to be executed in virginia, convicted of plotting the murder of her husband and stepson for insurance money. she died by way of lethal injection, speaking her final words to her daughter, saying i want kathy to know i love her and i'm very sorry, end quote. protestors outside the prison argued lewis was treated unfairly in that case. martha: right now, we are awaiting a major hearing on the voter intimidation case that involves the new black panther party. one of the key government players in this controversy is about to give his side of this story. steve centanni is live at the u.s. commission on civil rights in washington. steve, bring us up to date on where this case stands now and who we expect to hear from today. >> reporter: we expect to hear from two lawyers in the justice department, both of whom recommended going ahead with prosecution of this case. now, let me take you back to 2008, the election day, the presidential election, ale pooing place in philadelphia, where three new black panther party members were standing outside, wearing black paramilit

in here this evening. some powerful thunderstorms in parts of central virginia. reports of hail an inch and a half in diameter -- those are some big storms. here is the line of storms we're keeping an eye out for the next couple of hours. at that, temperatures have warmed up into the '90s. 94 at richmond. 90 at charleston, west virginia. still 91 degrees in downtown baltimore. 94 degrees. then at the moisture. you can see the dew point level in the low seventies to our south and east. combined heat and moisture and a little weather disturbance and you get the thunderstorms for a few hours. storms will be eased us moving out and partly cloudy skies. watch for gusty thunderstorms with winds shifting to the northwest as a weak front goes by. overnight lows of 61. the front will get here and then all part. we get a chance for a shower at it. it will dissipate in our area tomorrow and the steady supply of hot and humid air will continue into thursday afternoon and friday. the first couple of days of fall will feel like midsummer. not much in the way of precipitation through friday afternoon.
